Description

VB-80, Bombing Squadron Eighty, was a US Navy dive bomber squadron of World War II. It flew the Curtiss SB2C Helldiver as part of Carrier Air Group 80 aboard USS Ticonderoga (CV-14), entering combat in November 1944 with strikes on Japanese shipping and airfields around Luzon and the Philippines. After Ticonderoga was hit by kamikazes off Formosa in January 1945, the air group moved to USS Hancock (CV-19) and flew close air support for the Marines at Iwo Jima in February 1945.

The patch shows the squadron's shark-faced Helldiver, bomb slung under the fuselage, over a yellow disc with VB-80 above. Embroidered, cut edge, sew on. Approximately 6 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall.

A note on the aircraft: VB-80 was commissioned in 1944 and flew the SB2C Helldiver throughout its service, not the earlier Douglas SBD Dauntless.
