Formations & Origins
USNS Trenton (JHSV-5), the fifth ship of the Spearhead-class Joint High Speed Vessels, was constructed as part of a new generation of high-speed, shallow-draft transport ships designed to meet the United States Navy’s need for rapid intra-theater mobility. Delivered in April 2015 and named after the city of Trenton, New Jersey, the vessel was built by Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama. The JHSV program was developed to support both Army and Navy missions, with a flexible design able to transport troops, vehicles, and equipment quickly across coastal and riverine environments.
Notable Commanders
As a Military Sealift Command vessel, USNS Trenton does not operate under a traditional combatant command structure. Instead, it is crewed by civilian mariners with a small contingent of Navy personnel overseeing mission-specific operations. The ship's civil service master and mission commanders are specialists in sealift operations, logistics, and littoral mission planning. Their leadership ensures mission success in both peacetime and high-tempo operational environments.
Major Campaigns/Operations
Since entering service, USNS Trenton has been deployed primarily to the Mediterranean and the Horn of Africa, regions critical to maritime security and humanitarian operations. One of its most high-profile missions occurred in June 2018, when Trenton rescued 41 migrants stranded at sea off the coast of Libya. The operation underscored the vessel’s flexibility and humanitarian utility. Trenton has also been involved in exercises with NATO allies and African partners, supporting maritime domain awareness and enhancing regional stability.
Specialized Role/Equipment
USNS Trenton is designed for rapid transport and littoral operations. It can carry over 600 tons of cargo at speeds exceeding 35 knots and features a 20,000-square-foot mission bay for roll-on/roll-off cargo. With a shallow draft of under 15 feet, it can operate in ports and coastal areas inaccessible to larger warships. Its aviation deck supports helicopters and unmanned systems, while its adaptable design allows it to support disaster relief, medical support, and special operations missions. Although unarmed, the vessel can embark mission-specific defensive systems if required.
Acts of Heroism
The rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean stands as one of Trenton’s most poignant moments of service. In the face of chaotic conditions and overcrowding at sea, the crew of Trenton acted swiftly to save dozens of lives, embodying the Navy’s humanitarian ethos. The professionalism and compassion shown by her mariners during the operation were widely praised and demonstrated the vessel’s vital role beyond combat scenarios. The mission was not without risk—operating in politically volatile waters with limited support, the ship’s crew relied on training, coordination, and decisive action to execute the rescue flawlessly.
Legacy & Notable Achievements
Though not a warship in the traditional sense, USNS Trenton has carved out a reputation for versatility, reliability, and humanitarian excellence. She represents the evolving face of naval logistics and support—fast, modular, and capable of fulfilling missions across the full spectrum of conflict and crisis. The Trenton’s crest and patch, typically bearing symbols of swiftness and coastal adaptability, reflect her core mission: delivering readiness and relief with speed, agility, and determination. The ship continues to serve with distinction in one of the most complex maritime theaters in the world.
