United States Naval Facility Grand Turk serviced from 1954 to 1979. The base played crucial roles in the recovery efforts for the Friendship Seven space capsule and the Mercury space mission. Grand Turk base also played an important role in communications with the U.S. Guantanamo Bay base during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
