Formations & Origins
Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC) was activated on August 7, 2009, as a major command (MAJCOM) of the United States Air Force. Created in response to concerns over the stewardship of the nation’s nuclear arsenal, AFGSC consolidated the Air Force’s nuclear-capable bomber and intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) forces under one unified command. Headquartered at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, it serves as the combat-ready backbone of the nation’s strategic deterrent.
Notable Commands & Structure
AFGSC oversees two Numbered Air Forces: the 8th Air Force, which commands nuclear-capable B-52 Stratofortress and B-2 Spirit bombers, and the 20th Air Force, which controls the Minuteman III ICBM force. The command ensures global strike capability 24/7 and operates across a vast infrastructure of missile silos, bomber wings, and support units.
Major Campaigns/Operations
While AFGSC’s primary mission is deterrence, its bomber wings have participated in conventional operations across the globe, including show-of-force missions, precision strike campaigns, and Arctic and Pacific patrols. B-52 and B-2 bombers under AFGSC have supported missions in Operation Inherent Resolve and participated in Global Powerexercises and Bomber Task Force deployments.
Specialized Role/Equipment
AFGSC operates the nation’s most powerful strategic assets: the B-52 Stratofortress, B-2 Spirit, B-1 Lancer (until 2020), and the LGM-30G Minuteman III ICBM. The command is also preparing for the fielding of the B-21 Raiderand the Sentinel ICBM, ensuring continued dominance in the nuclear triad. Precision, readiness, and deterrence are core to every airman in the command.
Legacy & Notable Achievements
AFGSC's motto, “Deter, Assure, Strike,” embodies its strategic mission to prevent conflict through strength and to deliver overwhelming force when called upon. The command upholds the highest standards of accountability and professionalism in nuclear operations, preserving global stability and national defense. This patch represents a commitment to discipline, vigilance, and mission excellence on a global scale.
