Description

The name "Thunderbolt II" was not chosen by accident. It carries the weight of a legacy that goes back to World War II, when the barrel-bodied P-47 Thunderbolt took punishment over Europe and kept on flying. The A-10 picked up that name and earned it all over again — in the deserts of Iraq, the mountains of Afghanistan, and every theater where troops needed something reliable overhead.

The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II entered Air Force service in 1976 as a deliberate, no-compromise close air support platform. Where other jets were optimized for speed and altitude, the A-10 was built to work low — brutally durable, highly maneuverable at slow speeds, and armed with a GAU-8 Avenger cannon capable of tearing through tank armor at range. It was exactly the aircraft its name suggested: heavy-hitting, stubborn, and hard to kill.

If you flew the Thunderbolt II in any of its roles — CAS, forward air controller, combat search and rescue escort — this patch is a piece of the identity you carried in the cockpit. The Warthog community had its own culture, its own pride, and a deep attachment to an aircraft that the Pentagon tried more than once to retire. They were right to fight for it.

This patch honors all of them: the pilots who flew the A-10 through its service life, the maintainers who kept it in the air through harsh conditions, and the ground troops who were glad to hear those twin turbofans in the distance. The Thunderbolt II name meant something. It still does.

Shield-shaped at 3.5" × 4", this embroidered patch features a navy blue header with gold "A-10" lettering, a bright gold body showing a front-quarter A-10 Warthog silhouette crossing a bold red lightning bolt, and a cursive "Thunderbolt II" script inscription below. Black merrowed border. A clean, classic piece for any A-10 or USAF aviation collection.
