9th Engineer Command Patch

The IX Engineer Command patch is a shield-shaped piece in royal blue, centered on the gold-winged insignia of the 9th Air Force's engineering arm. "IX" in gold Roman numerals sits at the top. The wings spread wide around a red circular device crossed with white lines, with a white five-pointed star below. It's an official design that doesn't need to announce itself.

The IX Engineer Command was the airfield-building arm of the 9th Air Force in WWII. While fighter groups got the headlines, the engineer battalions were the ones turning French farmland into operational airstrips in 24 hours, sometimes less. After D-Day, they leapfrogged across France and into Germany, keeping tactical air power within striking range of the front. Without them, close air support stops.
