Formations & Origins
The 7th Infantry Regiment, nicknamed the “Cottonbalers,” was officially constituted in 1812 and is one of the oldest and most decorated active regiments in the United States Army. Its nickname was earned during the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, where soldiers used cotton bales for cover during fierce fighting against British forces. The unit’s storied history has been marked by continuous service through nearly every major American conflict since its formation.
Notable Commanders
The 7th Infantry has been led by numerous legendary officers over its 200+ year history, including Civil War heroes, World War generals, and peacetime commanders who shaped modern Army doctrine. The regiment’s leadership has consistently fostered a legacy of discipline, valor, and battlefield effectiveness.
Major Campaigns/Operations
The 7th Infantry Regiment has fought in more campaigns than any other regiment in the Army. Its battle honors include the War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Civil War, Spanish-American War, both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The regiment is also credited with multiple deployments to the Middle East and peacekeeping missions in the post-9/11 era.
Specialized Role/Equipment
As a light infantry unit, the 7th Infantry Regiment specializes in maneuver warfare, direct engagement, and urban combat. Throughout its history, the unit has adapted to muskets, bolt-action rifles, M1 Garands, and modern M4 carbines—always maintaining the infantryman’s core identity as the backbone of ground combat.
Acts of Heroism
The Cottonbalers have earned dozens of unit citations, and individual members have received multiple Medals of Honor, Distinguished Service Crosses, and Silver Stars. Whether storming the beaches of Normandy, holding lines in Korea, or patrolling Baghdad, the regiment has repeatedly demonstrated bravery under fire and unshakable resolve.
Legacy & Notable Achievements
The 7th Infantry Regiment's motto, “Volens et Potens” (“Willing and Able”), reflects over two centuries of unmatched service. With more campaign streamers than any regiment in the Army, the Cottonbalers stand as a living symbol of American infantry excellence. This patch honors that legacy and the countless soldiers who carried it forward.
