Formations & Origins
The 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne)—known as the “Night Stalkers”—was officially activated in 1981 in response to the failed Iran hostage rescue mission. Originating from Task Force 160 under the 101st Airborne Division, the unit was created to provide elite, low-level, night-time aviation capabilities for special operations forces. Headquartered at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, the 160th SOAR has since become the premier rotary-wing force for U.S. special operations.

Notable Commanders
Leaders of the 160th have typically been seasoned aviators from the Army’s most capable aviation commands, many with backgrounds in special forces coordination. They are known for pushing the limits of what rotary-wing aviation can accomplish in the most dangerous and denied environments on earth.

Major Campaigns/Operations
The 160th SOAR has participated in nearly every major U.S. conflict since the 1980s, including:

  • Operation Urgent Fury (Grenada)

  • Operation Just Cause (Panama)

  • Desert Storm and Desert Shield

  • Operation Gothic Serpent (Somalia) – immortalized in “Black Hawk Down”

  • Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom

  • Countless classified missions with JSOC and other Tier 1 units worldwide

Specialized Role/Equipment
The Night Stalkers fly specially modified helicopters such as the MH-6 Little Bird, MH-60 Black Hawk, and MH-47 Chinook, all adapted for low-level, night vision, and precision infiltration/exfiltration missions. Their aircraft are equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, infrared systems, and stealth features to fly undetected into the most hostile zones.

Acts of Heroism
From rescuing downed operators under fire to inserting SEALs and Delta Force teams deep behind enemy lines, the 160th’s reputation is forged in danger. One of their most legendary missions was supporting the Navy SEAL raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in 2011. Night Stalkers often fly missions so classified their stories are rarely told, but their motto says it all: "Death Waits in the Dark."

Legacy & Notable Achievements
Feared by enemies and revered by operators, the 160th SOAR has become synonymous with precision, bravery, and unmatched aviation skill. Their motto reflects their mastery of night warfare and their willingness to enter the shadows where others cannot. This patch is a tribute to those silent warriors who answer the call when the stakes are highest—and the night is darkest.
