Description

USS Ross Fletcher class destroyer combat ship and saw in the Marianas and Palaus Campaigns in the Pacific during WWII. The Ross was disabled on 19 October 1944 when she struck a mine port side between forward engineroon and fireroom. At 01:55 she struck a second mine in the area of the aft engineroom and began make a 14 degree list. Damage control stop the flooding and righted her enough to be towed to anchorage and during anchorage was attacked by Japanese aircraft inflicting further damage. Repairs were made in time for her provide sea and rescue duty during the invasion of Okinawa. The USS Ross was awarded five Battle Stars during WWII.
