Formations & Origins
In 1968, the U.S. Navy established the Naval Training Center (NTC) Orlando on the grounds of the former Orlando Air Force Base. The base was selected for its favorable climate, transportation access, and housing availability. NTC Orlando was designed to provide comprehensive training for enlisted personnel, offering basic indoctrination and specialized instruction for both the Regular Navy and the Navy Reserve. The center became operational shortly after its commissioning, rapidly becoming a premier training facility in the armed forces.

Notable Commanders
One of the most distinguished leaders at NTC Orlando was Rear Admiral Louise Currie Wilmot, who served as the Commanding Officer from 1989 to 1993. She was the highest-ranking female officer in the Navy at the time and played a pivotal role in integrating women into the training process. Under her leadership, NTC Orlando became the Navy's sole co-ed recruit training center, a significant step towards gender integration in the military.

While NTC Orlando itself did not participate in combat operations, its mission was critical in preparing sailors for various assignments worldwide. A memorial is being established in Bluejacket Park to commemorate the 650,000 sailors trained at NTC Orlando, featuring a Lone Sailor statue and a heritage wall detailing the Navy's history in Central Florida.
