Description
Located atop a man-made hill near the western end of Berlin. This hill, known locally as Teufelsberg or Devil's Mountain was erected by countless truckloads of debris created during WWII. An estimated 42 million cubic feet of rubble was piled 394 feet above sea level.
This strategic position offered enhanced listening of East German, Soviet and Warsaw Pact military traffic. A permanent structure was complete in October of 1963 and remained in service until the fall of East Germany and the Berlin Wall.
