Formations & Origins
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was created in 1944 under the Women’s Army Corps to address a mounting morale issue: undelivered mail. Comprised of over 800 African American women, this groundbreaking unit broke racial and gender barriers as they shipped out to Europe, becoming the first and only all-Black female battalion to do so during WWII.

Role in WWII
Stationed in Birmingham, England, and later France, the 6888th faced warehouses stacked floor to ceiling with backlogged mail—over 17 million pieces. Working around the clock in three shifts, they cleared the entire backlog in half the projected time using a revolutionary indexing system to track service members and their ever-changing locations. Their motto, "No Mail, Low Morale," defined their crucial role in soldier welfare.

Legacy & Symbolism
The 6888th’s story is one of determination, patriotism, and excellence. Their successful mission not only reconnected soldiers with home but also challenged perceptions of race and gender within the military. In 2022, they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for their service. This patch is a lasting tribute to their legacy and a symbol of their place in American military history.
